Guidelines for Rainy Day Gift Recipients
General Requirements

Cancer patients who wish to apply for a Rainy Day gift must currently be receiving active treatment in the Northern Virginia area.

Patients must be at least 18 years of age.

Active treatment includes: chemotherapy, immunotherapy, radiation therapy, bone marrow transplant and surgery with a recovery period in excess of four weeks. Hormone therapy is not included.

The Northern Virginia area includes the following counties: Arlington, Fairfax, Loudon, Prince William and all of the cities within these counties as well as the city of Manassas.

The patient must meet the financial guidelines set by the VCS Cancer Foundation.

A patient can receive one Rainy Day Gift from the VCS Cancer Foundation.
Application Requirements

The Medical Information Form must be completed by a social worker or health care professional.

The Medical Information Form must be signed by an oncologist, oncology nurse or licensed medical social worker to confirm the patient’s diagnosis.

Patients must provide one of the following: a charity letter from a medical clinic, Medicaid documentation, or evidence of need from a financial counselor, social worker or office manager in your medical treatment office.

The Release Form must be signed by the patient.

About Us
We provide financial assistance for non-medical expenses to cancer patients who currently receive active treatment in the Northern Virginia area. By providing some financial relief, we hope to reduce patients’ stress levels and allow them to focus more fully on their treatment and recovery. Our Rainy Day Gifts program provides this support.
Eligible Requests

The VCS Cancer Foundation Rainy Day gifts may be used to pay for non-medical living expenses. These include rent, utility bills, food, and gas.

Once a Rainy Day gift is approved, the patient must submit a copy of eligible bills to the VCS Cancer Foundation. For assistance with rent, patients must submit a copy of the lease or letter from the landlord with the rental payment indicated.
Ineligible Requests

The VCS Cancer Foundation will not approve requests for payment of any medical-related expenses, including medical bills, prescriptions, screening tests, alternative medicines or therapies.

The VCS Cancer Foundation will not approve requests for payments of credit card bills.
Gift Administration

Checks for approved expenses will be made payable directly to the vendor (e.g., landlord, utility company, mortgage holder) and provided to the patient to submit.

Checks will not be made payable to patients.

Gifts for purchase of food will be furnished in the form of supermarket gift cards.

Gifts for purchase of gas will be furnished in the form of gas station gift cards.
